Meet new friends as you journey on the Camino; exchange experiences and encourage one another to embrace what the new day has in store. Pass through quaint hamlets among whom are nestled churches dating back to the 12th and 13th centuries. Encounter small flocks of sheep and cattle grazing in the lush pastures and let the surrounding beauty of nature draw you in as you listen for God's voice along this ancient path.
The itinerary
-
We kick off the pilgrimage in Sarria, seat of nobles from the 12th Century. We'll walk through small hamlets and pass churches from the 12th & 13th c. Finally, we cross over the lovely Miño River and into Portomarín, our destination.
-
Portomarín is a lovely river village. In 1963 due to a large hydroelectric dam which flooded the area, the old town was moved brick by brick to where it sits today. We'll peek into the past when, on our way to Palas de Rei, we walk past some ancient ruins near Castromaior, which were populated from 6BCE to 1BCE.
-
The longest day, it is also one of the loveliest days as we pass over rolling hills and through old Medieval forests. For any brave culinary adventurers, today we walk through Melide, home of the famous Galician boiled octopus. We end our day in Arzúa, ready for a shower, clean clothes and delicious cuisine!
-
Day 4 marks the beginning of the end. You may even experience a tinge of sadness about this. A shorter walk, it's just as lovely as the previous stages, finishing up in the small town of O Pedrouzo. The path meanders through lush landscapes, dotted with quaint villages and shaded woodlands. Each step echoes with the tranquility of nature, providing a perfect backdrop for reflection and gratitude.
-
We finally arrive at our destination... Santiago de Compostela! There is usually an air of both excitement and nostalgia. The journey has been challenging and rewarding! Santiago's founding has been dated to 830 AD. It boasts a rich cultural and religious heritage. Here you will receive your Compostela certificate and anyone who wishes can attend the evening Pilgrim's Blessing Mass at the Cathedral. We should arrive with enough time for you to get cleaned up and go see the city. We'll wrap up our time together with a last group dinner and a short debrief.
